Treatment of Dental Caries

Caries is one of the main problems in dentistry. It is the main object of treatment since the dawn of dentistry. The process of treatment of caries is associated with a step of removing discolored, damaged tissue and final stage of restoration of form, color and contours of the tooth. For achieving this purpose, different materials and methods can be used. The oldest tool is amalgam or so called metal sealant. Along with its advantages and application areas, it has a number of disadvantages. The most significant of them is the poor aesthetics and the withdrawal of additional tissue in order to achieve stability of the seal (A removal of healthy tissue is required in order to develop inhibitory elements as the bond between the material and dental tissue is purely mechanical).

Modern trends in science, namely minimal invasive treatment, that is the withdrawal of a minimum amount of tooth tissue, and increased aesthetic requirements led to an evolution in the methods of restoring lost tooth tissue. With time the so called among patients white fillings appeared. They are basically two types – chemical composite and photo composite, viscous plastic respectively curing chemically or with light treatment.

In the era of aesthetic dentistry now we are talking about esthetic restorations that are not just filling defect of the tooth, but the overall recovery of dental structures in their complexity of form and color. The methods of the art allow restoration to be made absolutely invisible dental restorations because the light is passed in the same way as in the natural structure of the tooth. The materials used for esthetic restoration are complete systems of modern Photo-cured dental composites enable layering and the gradual restoration of teeth. It is now possible individualization of color and shape of teeth according to the age characteristics, individual characteristics of the dentition, sex of the patient and not least according to the views of beauty and aesthetics of the patient. This technology allows to recover not only destroyed by caries, trauma or deletion teeth, but to correct the form, slope, size or color, which for one reason or another (heredity, drugs and toxic causes injuries) do not match its natural parameters, or the esthetic views of the patient. We should not forget that art restoration as any method of treatment in medicine to have strict indications and are not applicable in every case. In this sense they have their advantages and disadvantages. The patient must be prepared that the process is complex, slow and require time and patience.
